Custodian/Maintenance Technician


Purpose of Position

The Custodian/Maintenance Technician is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe environment for the students, faculty, and staff of Kansas City Academy. This position provides daily cleaning and entry-level maintenance services, a variety of light, preventative maintenance activities as needed and/or assigned, and resolving immediate operational and/or safety concerns. This position reports to the Head of School. The position is full-time and salaried with benefits, Monday through Friday.



  • Cleans facilities and/or grounds (e.g., classrooms, offices, restrooms, grounds, etc.) to maintain a sanitary, safe and attractive environment.

  • Maintains supplies and equipment (e.g., cleaning solutions, paper products, vacuums, mops, etc.) to ensure the availability of custodial items required to properly maintain facilities.

  • Performs summer maintenance (e.g., strip/wax floors, move furniture, etc.) to complete and/or facilitate summer projects.

  • Inspects facilities systems and their component machinery to identify potential maintenance/repair needs (e.g., electrical, HVAC, plumbing, etc.) and provides an ongoing program of preventive maintenance.

  • Replenishes classroom and restroom supplies (e.g., paper towels, soap, etc.) to ensure adequate quantities for daily use.

  • Performs a variety of maintenance functions as needed and/or assigned (e.g., masonry, light equipment maintenance, light/new construction, etc.) to ensure that maintenance needs are met in an efficient, effective and timely manner.

  • Responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns (e.g., facility damage, vandalism, alarms, etc.) to take appropriate action or notify appropriate personnel for resolution.

  • Secures facilities and grounds (e.g., doors, gates, alarms, lights, etc.) to minimize property damage, equipment loss, and/or potential liability.

  • Able to operate custodial equipment and operation of the equipment must be consistent with the training gained from experience and the equipment manual.

  • Responsible for following assigned cleaning schedules and assigned cleaning procedures and practices as directed.

  • Assist with the setup and tear down of school events as directed.

  • Assist with snow removal or other outside clean-up, including lawn mowing, as directed.

  • Other duties as assigned.



  • Knowledge of safety hazards and proper use of various cleaning and sanitizing solutions.

  • Detail-oriented and thorough.

  • Ability to perform basic repairs and operate tools or equipment used in routine maintenance.

  • Ability to keep the school clean and orderly.

  • Ability to interact with staff, students, parents, and visitors at school while remaining professional, polite, and courteous.

  • Takes initiative and works independently.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities effectively


Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift, bend, stoop, climb, reach, and lift up to 50-80 pounds at a time.

  • Prolonged periods of standing and walking.
