KCA goes beyond traditional school and creates a supportive and nurturing community. Students are encouraged to participate, problem solve, think creatively, try new things, and incorporate things like individual self expression into their curriculum and daily lives. Teenagers become aware of the world that stretches far beyond their classroom and where they live.

Curriculum FAQ

-IS KCA ACCREDITED?
KCA is accredited through Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools.
Accreditation is the affirmation that a school or other educational institution is providing the level of quality in its educational programs, services, activities, and/or resources expected by its community of stakeholders and endorsed by the education world. When the Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools (CESS) accredit a school, they certify that the school meets the prescribed standards of quality of the Middle States Association.
To become accredited, or have its accreditation renewed, by the Middle States Association, a school must demonstrate that it meets the appropriate Standards for Accreditation. Recognizing the unique characteristics of schools and other educational institutions, the Middle States Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools have adopted Standards for Accreditation appropriate for each type of member institution: Standards for Accreditation 2016
-WHAT IS EXPEDITIONARY LEARNING (EL) EDUCATION?
KCA is one of 165 schools across the country with the honor of being included in the EL Education Schools network, an educational collaboration stemming from The Harvard Graduate School of Education and Outward Bound, USA.
EL Education is a nationwide education network of K-12 schools with a focus on mastery of knowledge and skills, character growth, and producing high-quality student work. EL Education inspires growth in students in these three areas through hands-on project-based learning, moving learning beyond classroom walls and instilling in students a send of confidence through exploration and adventure.
KCA is the only independent school in the Kansas City area offering a curriculum built around EL Education. With support from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, we are a part of a strong community serving young people with a bountiful educational experience.
Faculty receive intensive professional development that emphasizes curriculum, best teaching practices, and building a strong school culture. EL Education supports and enhances “the KCA way” of learning as it combines rigorous academic content with active teaching and community service, along with real-world projects.
As a result, our unique education is designed to recognize, nurture, and challenge each student’s personal and academic potential. EL Education brings about significant improvements in the whole school and student achievement.
