KCA Electives

KCA’s art studio provides a large work space with a wide variety of materials including a kiln and a darkroom. Community artists regularly visit with students to provide constructive feedback on their artwork and portfolios.

The KCA student art experience also expands beyond the walls of KCA and promotes collaborative learning opportunities with organizations such as the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art and the Kansas City Art Institute.

Whether pursuing an interest in photography, video, ceramics, drawing, 3D art, anime, or textiles, KCA is a place where students can create their future.

Students develop skills used in restaurant cooking and large-scale kitchens, as well as dining room procedures, using the school lunch program as their training laboratory. The program incorporates new developments in the areas of institutional food, safety, fine dining, and basic baking principles.

We also offer a two-year Culinary Arts Certificate program designed to prepare students for a career in the culinary arts.

From Studio Music (not your traditional band class!) to Music Theory classes, along with various after school music programs, KCA has a robust offering for those interested in music. Currently, we offer intermediate and advanced bands as a part of the curriculum. Our school also has its own professional recording studio, equipped with the modern technology students need to create and record their musical masterpieces. Students are encouraged to write and produce original music! The band performs numerous public performances throughout the Kansas City community each year and at KCA at the end of each semester.

After school programs include an a capella choir (KCA Singers) and beginner guitar lessons.

At Kansas City Academy we offer a unique approach to physical education. Cross Fit trainer/PE teacher, Dana Davenport, strives to push students to their best health and fitness. Students are able to utilize their surroundings by going on bike rides, walking to a local park, or by having intense school-wide ping pong tournaments.

KCA Theater provides the opportunity for aspiring young actors to expand their experience and abilities by rehearsing and performing in the Sally Firestone Theater. The KCA theater department provides a process-based arts education, to help students discover their passion, self-expression, and confidence
