Kansas City Academy Middle & High School Students on HB 2051

“It’s okay to say gay”

Kansas City Academy Middle & High School Students on HB 2051
Inside this building are some bright and dynamic young minds.
Below, KCA students react to HB2051. [Prohibits the discussion of sexual orientation in public school instruction, material, or extracurricular activity except in scientific instruction on human reproduction]

It’s ridiculous. That is freedom of speech. You can’t stop somebody from being who they are–it’s inhumane.  (11 grader)

I think it’s mean because they (homosexuals) are humans too–God made them. (7th grader)

The more you try to control someone’s life the more they will resist. Also, the bullying would increase and people who stood up to the bullying could get into trouble too. (7th grader)

There is no shame in gay. (Faculty member)

They think if we ignore it, it will die out and everybody will be the same. (7th grader)

I respect the right to have LGBT clubs. (9th grader)

Gay people are the same as straight people. I think there should be gay/straight alliance clubs and we should be able to learn about it. It’s free speech. (10th grader)

It’s like don’t ask, don’t tell for schools which I think should never have been implemented (in the military). Gay or straight, you’re no better or worse a person than anyone else. (12th grader)
